does not have a seal, it will let go. Sharks also play a vital role in keep- ing our ocean ecosystem balanced from the overpopulation of fish. There are also over 500 different species of sharks but only about a dozen or so are/can be dangerous to humans. Though sharks are not going out and hunting humans specifically, it does not mean they are not dangerous. So, to make sure we can prevent encounters with them there are ways to help keep us and them safe. During times when there are many beachgoers, lifeguards now have longer shifts to keep watch and keep people safe. There are also many signs that warn tourists about what to do when there is potentially a shark. Medical kits can also be found in many different spots at the Cape's beaches. The Cape is even looking into deploying a few buoy systems that can sense when sharks are around. They use sonar and an algorithm to identify these predators and can warn lifeguards when they are close. There are even little portable devices you can strap to yourself or a surfboard that send out little electromagnetic waves that will send a shark away. Another way you can keep yourself safe is using a shark tracker app that can be used to spot sharks and track tagged ones as well. Shark Tracker Apps Tracker apps are starting to be used to improve our communities' safety and education on sharks. There are a few apps that are able to track and list possible or confirmed sightings. One app is called Sharktivity. It is an app that can track currently tagged sharks and can show their patterns and location. The app will show you the shark's name and everywhere they've been since being tagged. Sharktivity can be a great way to make sure there are no sharks in your area or learn about the ones that have been tagged and what they're up to. Sharks are animals that have been around for a very long time so let's not let them go anywhere anytime soon. Knowing more about these animals does not only promote marine life education, but it shows you that there is more to these creatures. It also promotes your safety and well-being while you tour beautiful Cape Cod. www.summerguidecapecod.com 51
