SAFARI
OVER
SAND

Tours also include glimpses
of the Provincetown Artists'
Dune Shacks—small wooden
structures built as early as the
1880s, likely for fishing.
Today, artists use them for
residencies; notable figures
like Jack Kerouac and
Tennessee Williams once
stayed here.
"It feels like a safari," Costa
says. "The ride is slow and
comfortable, though you'll
feel movement
as you
traverse the dunes." Founded
in 1946 by Art Costa (Rob's
father), the company began
as Art's Beach Taxi after he
abandoned fishing due to
lacking "sea legs." Now in its
76th year, Art's Dune Tours
partners with local businesses
to offer experiences like "Art
with Art's," combining dune
tours with watercolor lessons,
or visits to Race Point
Lighthouse, with ticket
proceeds aiding preservation.
Costa enco
urages all visitors
to explore the dunes. "It's
like another planet out
there," he says. "There's
nothing like it anywhere else
on the Cape."
