To some, sand is the glitter
of a summer vacation—it
clings to your skin, gets
tracked onto your floors, and
collects in crevices you didn't
know you had, both at home
and on your body alike. But
beyond these seasonal
nuisances, sand serves as the
tiny building blocks that form
Cape Cod's most treasured
natural beauty: its dunes.
The birth of these dunes
began thousands of
years
ago, when wind, weather,
and glacial debris sculpted

Provincetown. That land
evolved into a forest-like
terrain until the Pilgrims
arrived and settled there in
1620. As they chopped
down trees, the topsoil
eroded, leaving behind sand.
