West Barnstable and Barnstable Village have retained their colonial charm. Old King's Highway (Rte. 6A) runs through Barnstable and is lined with historic homes, art galleries, antique shops, and beautiful scenery. Centerville sits on a peninsula on the southern side of Barnstable. With its maritime location on Nantucket Sound, Centerville was once home to wealthy ship captains who built stately homes in the early 1800s. Craigville Beach, one of the most famous on the south shore, offers boating, beachcombing and swimming in the calm surf and warm waters of Nantucket Sound. Established in 1648, Cotuit is a quaint village located on Nantucket Sound. Tucked between Falmouth and Hyannis, it is a short distance to historic Sandwich. Off the beaten path, Cotuit offers a combination of a quiet residential area and tourist-oriented attractions. As the Cape's largest town, Hyannis has the largest concentration of businesses, shops, restaurants, and entertainment on the Cape. It has the busiest airport on the Cape, and its harbor offers fishing and sailing charters, as well as ferries to the islands of Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard.
