OUTER CAPE
Eastham
Wellfleet
Truro
Provincetown
Once home to whaling, fishing, salt works, and asparagus farming, Eastham
today is best known for its beaches and conservation areas. The National
Seashore Park, established by President John F. Kennedy to protect over
27,000 acres of the Outer Cape, covers one third of the town. Some of the
best kayaking and canoeing on the Cape can be found on Eastham's marshes
and open waters.
Wellfleet is an artsy fishing village with miles of ocean and bayside beaches,
numerous spring-fed ponds, and many fine art galleries, shops, and
restaurants. Wellfleet's Atlantic Ocean side is also part of the Cape Cod
National Seashore Park, and 1,000 acres within the Massachusetts Audubon
Society Wildlife Sanctuary are located here.
With around only 1,200 year-round residents, Truro is the least populated
town on Cape Cod. Wild ocean beaches, kettle ponds, salt marshes, and
oak forests are part of its dramatic natural beauty.
Provincetown is on the uppermost tip of Cape Cod. PTown, as it is known
by many, is a cosmopolitan mix of people and a haven for artists, writers,
actors, and musicians. Commercial Street's art galleries, jewelry and leather
shops – as well as fine restaurants and small cafes – is a shopping mecca
for all.
