Page 88 of 147 87 You don't need to be a historian to know that the year 2020 marks the 400th anniversary of the First Encounter between the Native Ameri- cans and the Mayflower Pilgrims. This historic event happened right here on Cape Cod in 1620, when one of history's most notable ships, the Mayflower, arrived in Prov- incetown Harbor after a grueling 66-day voy- age across the Atlantic, this ocean allowing the pilgrims to escape the Church of England's iron fist. Before settling in Plymouth, the pilgrims ex- plored the land of the outer Cape, a region that was one of the 67 villages inhabited by the na- tive people of the Wampanoag Nation known as Nauset. The three towns that were directly touched by the First Encounter – Provincetown, Eastham and Plymouth - will hold a spectacular series of events, all of which will commemorate and ac- curately represent life before, during, and after the time shared between the Native Americans and pilgrims. The commemoration kicks off on April 24 at 7 a.m. with the Provincetown 400 Com- memoration Opening Ceremony at the Pil- grim Monument and Provincetown Museum, 1 High Pole Hill Road in Provincetown. Attendees to this free event will hear remarks from Rep. Sarah Peake and Sen. Julian Cyr, followed by a performance of the Outer Cape Chorale. Then at 11 a.m., the Plymouth 400 Commemoration Opening Ceremony will take place at Memorial Hall, 83 Court Street in Plymouth. This event will feature historical content, musical headliners, readings, original productions, and visual narra- tives surrounding the themes shared by the past and future: exploration, innovation, self-gover- nance, and thanksgiving. Invitees include state and federal officials, representatives of the UK, The Netherlands, colony partners, and more.
