The Upper Cape consists of towns that, when viewed on a map, fit together like puzzle pieces – Bourne, Sandwich, Mashpee and Falmouth. These towns are closest to the Cape Cod Canal, a key marker that signifies guests' arrival to the most eastern part of Massachusetts, and a breath away from rest and relaxation. But, to get there, first thing's first – pick a bridge, any bridge. BOURNE Whether visitors scale the Sagamore or Bourne Bridge, their first stop on the Cape is the town of Bourne. Some, like Bourne native Lorna Cia- vola, say that they wouldn't mind if this town was a visitors' only stop – that's because Bourne is a diamond in the rough and has something for everyone. History buffs will enjoy exploring Bourne's vertical lift train bridge which stretches over the Cape Cod Canal. Back in the days when fishing was a prominent means of income, the bridge would raise to allow fishing vessels to pass through; this helped crewmen navigate the ca- nal without having to circle around the arm of Cape Cod, preventing devastating wreckages. The bridge, still in action today, is most of- ten raised to let passing boats through and low- ered when a train from the Buzzards Bay Rail- road, the Cape Flyer from Boston or others need to cross. Ciavola, the Membership Coordinator of Cape Cod Canal Region Chamber of Com- merce, says "It's truly a wonder of the world." Visitors should consider taking a train, especially if they'd like to relax and soak in Bourne's beau- tiful scenery. For those looking for a more active vaca- tion, Bourne offers paved trails for walking, jog- ging, hiking, biking and more. The town is also famous for its fishing, such as bluefish and black sea bass, a favorite of sportsmen and seafood lovers alike. "The fishing here you won't find anywhere else," Ciavola says.
